Nielsen Media research have released the results of the third 2008 radio ratings survey for Australian metropolitan stations, with some surprises in a couple of markets.
In Melbourne, there was not much change at the top; Fairfax Radio's powerhouse talkback station 3AW remained at number one, where it has been for most of the previous decade, followed by Austereo's pop station FOX and the ABC's local talk station 774 ABC Melbourne. However DMG's pop station Nova 100 plummeted two points, with large drops across all shifts. There was a slight improvement for DMG's other station, the adult-oriented Vega 915. Austereo's rock station Triple-M has sunk further, and does not appear to be getting any benefit from its new high profile breakfast show.
Sydney's results were not all that much different, with talk station 2GB maintaining its number one position, although with a drop of one point. Austereo pop station 2DAY-FM remained at the second position, and 702 ABC Sydney took third. Triple-M Sydney also lost a number of points, demonstrating that Austereo's rock networks troubles aren't confined to just one city. Fairfax's talk station 2UE showed some improvements across all shifts.
There were no major changes to Brisbane's ratings, with the local population showing a distinct preference for music stations over talk. DMG's Nova 106.9 stayed at number one, followed by Austereo's Triple-M - the only city where that network is doing well - and third, ARN's 97.3.
In Adelaide, DMG talk station 5AA held its top position, while their pop station Nova 919 maintained third, although with a 1.6 point drop. In second position was ARN's Mix 102.3, benefitting from strong morning and lunchtime shifts.
Finally to Perth, where Austereo's Mix 94.5 remained at number one, with a huge lead over its nearest rival 92.9 - another Austereo station. In third position was ABC 720 Perth, well ahead of Fairfax Media's music station 96fm and their talk station 6PR.
