Public Radio of Armenia

Posted by Paul • Sunday, September 10. 2006

Public Radio of Armenia is the state broadcaster of the Republic of Armenia. Their external service, the Voice of Armenia, has long been broadcasting worldwide, although it appears that they may soon be leaving the shortwave bands. Anyone wanting to catch their remaining broadcasts should check their foreign language program guide.

Domestically, Public Radio of Armenia broadcasts two radio channels on the long, medium and shortwave bands and a network of FM transmitters. There is also a live internet stream of one of the channels.

English news from Belgium

It has been over a year since Radio Vlaanderen Internationaal dropped its foreign language broadcasts on shortwave, however it is still possible to hear short English-language news bulletins from RVI/VRT via the internet.

Furthermore, VRT, the state broadcaster of the Flanders region, has a comprehensive English language news portal.

Classical Music: 3MBS, Melbourne

3MBS is a community radio station, based in Melbourne, Australia, run by the Music Broadcasting Society of Victoria, specialising in classical music and occasionally jazz. It was the first radio station to broadcast on the FM band in Victoria, and the second in Australia; the first was its Sydney counterpart, 2MBS.

Since then, they have been joined by 4MBS Brisbane, 5MBS Adelaide and Artsound FM, Canberra.

Internet streams are available for the Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane stations.

DW-TV - Online stream

For those without satellite or cable access, Deutsche Welle TV has been broadcasting their programs online for a number of years now. The quality is excellent, and there are both Real and Windows Media streams available. I have even successfully watched this stream on my HP iPaq PDA.

Programming consists of alternating hour long blocks in German and English; half an hour of news, followed by a half hour documentary, current affairs or lifestyle program.

Radio Polonia is the external service of Polskie Radio, the national public broadcaster of the Republic of Poland.

Radio Polonia broadcasts in English five times per day, via their online stream and satellite, and three times per day on shortwave.

In addition to the external service, Polskie Radio broadcasts four national radio services.

Program 1 carries news, talk and light music, while Program 2 broadcasts classical music and other cultural programs. Program 3 is the national pop music station and Polskie Radio Bis is the youth and educational radio station, with a more alternative selection of music.

Polskie Radio is also heavily into podcasting.
